Using a similar technique for getting bowed sounds out of an acoustic guitar, I recorded the two guitar tracks you hear here for accompaniment on a song from my record 'Finding Grace in America' from 2005 titled 'DADDY ONLY DID THE BEST HE KNEW HOW'. The rest of the song, except for my guest player's parts, has been left out of this re-mix.

Right around then, my town's (Eden, NC's) annual Charlie Poole Festival was happening and I was helping with sound and stage setups. John Hartford had been the scheduled headline act, but DIED just before the festival. Enter Syracuse, NY homeboy and banjo genius, Tony Trischka. During a break while eating some sweet potato pie in a big RV and reminiscing about Syracuse, I mentioned a song I had that would sound great with his banjo on it. I was particularly wealthy ;) that year, had $100 to spend, and offered it to Tony for a session at my studio. He accepted.

A very nice man, a add with sons, and with intense humor and focus. He came to our house for lunch on Sunday, listened to the song once, and asked me to roll tape. I did, into a Radio Shack pencil condensor mic. At the end, he asked me to give him another track and roll tape again, playing a duet with himself!
A couple of years later, TT released an amazing record of duets with other banjo players. I wonder whether this duet with himself may have had something to do with that subsequent project.
