about

As a college kid in the late 1970's, I remember reading that some of the early (and most interesting & dense) pre-digital music by The Residents owed a great debt to the American composer, Harry Partch [June 24, 1901 – September 3, 1974], and even suggested that they had met and 'worked together' in some capacity.
Between 1982-1990, I lived and worked in South Korea as a translator. I had numerous opportunities to interact with folk players and became enamored of their use of a 5-tone scale using instruments which were played by bending strings to and from desired notes.
Ten years later, while I was living in MA doing graduate work in Clinical Special Education and working as an Upward Bound residential counselor there, the Music Dept at Fitchburg State College was tossing out a bunch of vinyl. I was given a pile of Partch, Cowell, Nancarrow, and other great records. I immediately fell in love with this man's remarkable mind, work, and microtonalism. I read his book 'Genesis of a Music', and his late work, 'Delusion of the Fury' knocked me off my feet on a host of levels - musical, theatrical, constumes, make-up, dance... damn. Here was a guy who made odd instruments like me! :)
VIA this wonderful website (musicmavericks.publicradio.org/features/feature_partch.html) which I heard about on National Public Radio, I am able to 'play Harry Partch's homemade instruments' digitally.
These are recordings of solo improvisations using fourteen of them.
What fun!
