about

Between 1992-1995, HipBone was a power-trio performing gigs in Massachusetts bars, strip clubs & other seedy places. We rehearsed relentlessly in the warehouse where I lived for 2 years following my 1992 divorce. Peter Zolli and Keith Prescott had by now 'gotten it', as far as Bret-songs were concerned, and had become a unique and artful rhythm section.
The studio tracks come from the same period. Zolli and Hart got into some intense conflicts about what sounded good and how far a song should be stretched before it ceases to be a song.
With this record, we pretty much abandoned adherence to sounding live-on-record, and began using the studio as an instrument to augment the song arrangements.
Bret's stompbox-addiction is well-documented in these recordings, particularly the newly-acquired Digitech WHAMMY II pitch-shifting device coupled with a vintage 70's Polytone octave-divider. You'll hear them both pounce-in "on 11" at the end of 'Monkey at My Door'. All of this stuff is rare."

A friend whose band practiced across the building from us said "The first time we heard you guys, it scared the hell out of us."
The live tracks here are us, warts and all, as we would have sounded on a 'good' night. Those years were like a Doctoral course in guitar electronics & extended technique for me.
We self-released several cassette EPs and LPs using 4-track equipment, with bassist Pete Zolli engineering and 'producing'. We got 'the word' out. In 1996, we rolled an 8-track project at Steve Blake's TOAD HALL, from which the studio tracks (1/2/4/5/7) here were culled.
Since ceasing as a performing ensemble, we kept making records: Cho-Rok (1997) and Decoupage (2001). - bhh 2009
