about

"The idea was Bret's to begin with. It seems he does this sort of thing, collaborating with people across the world from his base in North Carolina. These, dear reader, are the fruits of our collaboration.
Working w/ someone on a different continent isn't easy, and unlike what I would consider a 'normal' modus operandi. One player records their playing, alone (or thereabouts - Bret's kids make small guest appearances here and there). These 'sourcetracks' are then posted to the second player to duet with. The second player approaches the sourcetracks without pre-preparation, as far as possible, and the recording is a first take. The recipient then mixes what they have, and the recording is complete.
For me, it was as strange way to work: normally I would be in the room with someone I was recording with. Your gestures are recognized and responded to in real-time, and between the participants, a consensus is arrived at, via prods and leaps, a coherent whole looms from the gaps in-between like a swamp monster.
This way, no monster. You can only guess at the responses to your gestures, as they are yet to happen (by a matter of some weeks). Maybe no better or worse than the 'normal' method: you, dear reader, dear listener, must make that judgement.
As a matter of interest, on Disc 1 [note: tracks 1-9], Bret was the originator of the sourcetracks, and I did the mix; while for Disc 2 [tracks 10-15] the situation was reversed - I provided sourcetracks for Bret's final touches and mixdown. And you must note this: having described the rules of engagement, the track 'Lives of Quiet Desperation' on Disc 1 does not follow them (Artists, eh? Can't even follow their own rules, never mind anyone else's). Part of what Bret supplied me with consisted of some short tracks, mainly of bells. These I looped and processed and then passed through my real-time processing setup (details on request) to create a longer whole, which I then played reed instruments over (wood-flute, mezzo-soprano sax, and xaphoon)."
